CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10)

Evidence ratingLow

An essential coenzyme for mitochondrial ATP production, found in high concentrations in energy-demanding tissues such as the heart, liver, and kidneys. Body levels decline with age and statin use; some RCTs have reported benefits for statin-associated muscle pain. Evidence for direct performance enhancement in healthy athletes remains limited and inconsistent.

Effects reported in research

Some studies report reduction in statin-associated myopathy (muscle pain) in statin users

Antioxidant properties have been linked to improvements in oxidative stress markers in some research

May support mitochondrial function and reduce perceived fatigue, primarily observed in older adults or clinical populations

Reduced form (ubiquinol) has been shown to produce higher plasma levels than the oxidized form (ubiquinone)

Dosage & timing

  • 100–300 mg/day.
  • Take with meals (especially those containing fat) to improve absorption, as CoQ10 is fat-soluble.
  • For statin-associated muscle symptoms, 100–200 mg/day is commonly used in studies.

Cautions

  • Serious adverse effects are rarely reported at typical doses, but gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, stomach discomfort) may occur.
  • Those taking statins or anticoagulants such as warfarin must consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.
  • Safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established — consult a doctor before use.
