Summary

Summary

A meta-analysis evaluating the effects of taurine supplementation on endurance, strength, and muscle fatigue across 10 RCTs. Moderate effects on endurance (VO2max, time to exhaustion) were observed. Proposed mechanisms include intracellular calcium regulation in cardiac and skeletal muscle, osmoregulation, and reduction of oxidative stress. Common dosage is 1–3 g/day. Widely recognized as an energy drink ingredient. Favorable safety profile.

Key Findings

Key findings

  • 1

Significant improvement in endurance (time to exhaustion) with moderate effect size

  • 2

Mechanism suggested through intracellular calcium regulation in skeletal muscle

  • 3

    1-3 g/day dosage found effective

  • 4

Effects on strength weaker than endurance

  • 5

Favorable safety profile with no serious adverse effects
